Lessons learnt

The Design for Manufacture competition was devised to bring out the best in the housing sector. It started out with the simple challenge to build good-quality homes for a construction cost of £60,000, but it turned out to be about much more than that. Entrants to the competition rose to the occasion in a variety of ways with innovation and new partnerships. The legacy will be long lasting.

Lessons Learnt publication June 2005 - PDF (4 MB)

The Design for Manufacture Lessons Learnt publication is proof that the UK housebuilding industry is capable of delivering a world-class response to the challenges of the 21st Century.

The publication was put together by English Partnerships and the Department for Communities and Local Government, with the help of the many organisations involved in the competition.  It is a comprehensive publication which highlights the 10 main lessons learnt and provides a wealth of detail on the winning and commended schemes.

The document shows why Design for Manufacture has caught the imagination of our industry over the past year and is now set to change the future of housebuilding.

Lessons Learnt 2
There will be further lessons to learn from the detailed monitoring English Partnerships and the developers are carrying out, of the construction phases on each of the 10 sites. We therefore plan to produce a further lessons learnt of the construction phases on each of the 10 sites publication later this year.

Carbon Challenge
A new initiative building on the principles of Design for Manufacture called the Carbon Challenge was launched in February 2007. The Carbon Challenge is being run to accelerate the housebuilding industry’s response to climate change by fast-tracking the creation of a number of zero carbon homes and communities.

Visit English Partnerships' website for further information about the Carbon Challenge.
